There are a LOT of mistakes we can make as LOs day in and day out.
But there’s one thing that can take down your entire operation.
It’s not referral business, networking, lead gen…
It’s worse than any market downturn or a lost deal.
The one thing that can derail your success faster than anything else?
Self-doubt.
And if you’re rolling your eyes at that, sighing because the last thing you want right now is some motivational pep talk over email…
Mental mechanics are real.
This is something we all need to hear at one point in our life, and it’s happening for you today, right here right now.
And if you don’t feel like it applies to you, let me ask you this…
How’s it feel to be 0% human?
Even when I’ve been at the top of my game, somehow self-doubt always scores itself a spot somewhere along the ride up.
Sometimes it’s right up there in the passenger seat, sometimes it’s driving the car itself, and other times it’s tucked away in the trunk, quietly waiting to take shotgun again.
So let’s talk about it, and more importantly, how we can use it to our advantage.
First of all, we’ve got to accept it and not resist it.
Like I said, self-doubt is that annoying, uninvited guest who shows up and doesn’t know when to leave.
Ignoring and pretending it’s not there won’t make it magically disappear.
Accept that it’s part of the process.
The sooner you recognize that everyone, even the most successful LOs, feels this way, the sooner you can move forward.
And here’s another mindset shift:
Self-doubt reminds us that we have humility.
It reminds us that we have more growing to do, because if we thought we knew everything there is to ever know in life, we would stay stagnant.
So while it’s an uncomfortable feeling, find comfort in knowing that you have so much more growing to do.
That there’s another iteration of you out there, one that will make you look back and say “wow, I’m so grateful to be where I am now.”
And to initiate that growth, we have to look into that self-doubt to learn what direction we need to go in.
Ask yourself:
What is this doubt telling me?
Stop and process the doubt.
Is it pointing out a skill I need to develop or an area I need to improve?
Harness and redirect it as a catalyst to learn more, get better, and push yourself outside your comfort zone.
Growing up, my parents and I lived in a 600 sq foot apartment.
I didn’t have much and always felt second tier to a lot of my classmates.
For years, I had such a bad chip on my shoulder.
And there were many days I had self doubt.
I was really uncomfortable in my own skin.
Remember, discomfort is where growth happens.
Now, sometimes the self-doubt reaches a breaking point where you feel like you can’t even move.
I used that self doubt later on to fuel my hunger to learn more.
The more I learned, the more confident I became.
And the more confident I became, the less self doubt I had.
I started to gather little wins every day.
I started to speak prophetically and less retroactively.
The limitations of my past became my rocket fuel for my future.
And all my language became that:
“I am successful”
“I am closing 15 deals a month”
“I am doing what top producers do.”
Reflect on the deals you’ve closed, the relationships you’ve built, and the challenges you’ve overcome.
Keep a “Win Wall” or a note on your phone where you can jot down achievements—big and small—and revisit them when doubt creeps in.
Lastly, have a plan for moving forward.
There is no better remedy than action.
So come up with a task you can do to get you out of that mindset and snap you back into reality, if all your other grounding techniques fall short.
Make that call, send that email, go to that networking event.
The more you push through, the more you’ll realize that the only thing standing in your way is you.
Get after it.
